How Much is a Massage Therapist Paid?

While the main reason most people get into a massage therapy career is their passion for the craft, it is also necessary to keep finances in mind.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the average massage therapist in Washington makes around 39 dollars per hour or 80,000 per year, putting the career just ahead of the average income of all careers in Washington.

Alaska and Vermont are the only U.S. states where massage therapists make more than Washington, according to the statistics available from 2023.

The national average in all states is 62,500 per year or 30 dollars per hour.

The top 10% of massage therapists in Washington make 110,000 dollars per year, while the bottom 10% earning in the state make 57,000 yearly.

Massage therapy is a tricky profession because it is so physically demanding. "Full time" for a massage therapist is about 25 hours of massage per week. This is often supplemented with lighter work in the holistic field, like teaching or energy work, and sometimes products sales as well.

Projected Job Growth

Additionally, projected job growth for massage therapists is 18%, making it much higher than the national average. For the last decade there have been an average of 22,000 massage therapy job openings across the United States. There is no shortage of need for practitioners in spas, chiropractic, and other facilities, making it a fantastic time to break into the field. In fact, most massage facilities are excited to take on new graduates, giving them the opportunity to continue learning as they get paid.
